Arsenal comfortably saw off West Ham to maintain their two-point lead at the top of the Premier League table. Eduardo put the Gunners ahead in the second minute, finding space in the box to smash home into the bottom corner. Anton Ferdinand had a shot cleared off the line as West Ham responded well but Emmanuel Adebayor made it 2-0, slotting home from the narrowest of angles. Carlos Tevez scored the only goal as Manchester United secured a narrow victory to stay two points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal. Tevez’s overhead kick and a Cristiano Ronaldo back-heel carved open the Blues defence and the Argentine calmly slotted home the winner on 25 minutes. Cameron Jerome was down injured then but Birmingham complaints were limited. Tevez, who went off late on with an ankle injury, also hit the woodwork twice while the Blues never gave up.

Roy Hodgson was dealt a cruel blow in his first game in charge of Fulham after Chelsea bounced back from a goal down to win at Craven Cottage. The home side took the lead when Danny Murphy converted a penalty after Joe Cole carelessly tripped Moritz Volz. Chelsea equalised after the break when Salomon Kalou nodded in Alex’s headed pass from Juliano Belletti’s corner. And Michael Ballack grabbed Chelsea’s winner from the spot after he had his shirt pulled by Clint Dempsey.All the goals and highlights from Craven Cottage.

Martin Laursen’s 84th-minute winner helped Aston Villa to sixth place in the Premier League after an entertaining match against Tottenham. Olof Mellberg put Villa in front when he rose unopposed to head home Ashley Young’s free-kick on 40 minutes. Spurs equalised in the 79th minute when Jermain Defoe finished acrobatically after Dimitar Berbatov set him up. Middlesbrough’s poor home form continued as Andrew Johnson and James McFadden struck in the second half to give Everton a battling win. Johnson latched on to Steven Pienaar’s flick to steer Everton ahead with a precise low finish past Mark Schwarzer. And McFadden combined superbly with Johnson, showing great composure and neat footwork to make it 2-0. Boro wasted several good chances with Tuncay going close and Gary O’Neil forcing a fine save from Tim Howard.

Portsmouth earned a well-deserved three points with victory over Reading. The hosts were reduced to 10 men after only four minutes with Ibrahima Sonko sent off for bringing down Benjani. Niko Kranjcar hit the post with the resulting penalty but minutes later Sol Campbell made it 1-0, bundling the ball home after Marcus Hahnemann’s fumble. Benjani also saw a header hit the bar in the first half before John Utaka sealed the win on 66 minutes by beating Nicky Shorey and rounding Hahnemann.

Eduardo da Silva’s first Premier League goals helped Arsenal beat Everton and ensured they leapfrogged Manchester United at the top of the table. Arsenal had to come from behind after Tim Cahill poked in on 19 minutes but Eduardo levelled after the break and coolly slotted another on 58 minutes. Nicklas Bendtner was then sent off but Emmanuel Adebayor hit a third after a mix-up in Everton’s defence. Mikel Arteta saw red after an elbow before Tomas Rosicky scored late on.

Dimitar Berbatov scored four goals for Tottenham as they won an amazing game. Berbatov put Spurs ahead with a tap-in before Kalifa Cisse levelled and Ivar Ingimarsson headed Reading in front. Berbatov smashed home an equaliser, Dave Kitson restored Reading’s lead and Berbatov completed his hat-trick only for Kitson to then put Reading 4-3 up. Steed Malbranque equalised and Jermain Defoe scored from the rebound after Robbie Keane’s penalty was parried, before Berbatov got Spurs’ sixth.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s missed penalty for Manchester United proved crucial at West Ham as the Premier League champions were beaten at Upton Park. United got an early let-off when Hayden Mullins hit the woodwork and Mark Noble blazed high from the rebound. Ronaldo quickly made the Hammers pay when he headed in a Ryan Giggs cross. But Ronaldo missed a penalty and that inspired West Ham into a late rally, which saw Anton Ferdinand and Matthew Upson each head in for the win.

Gareth Barry’s late penalty earned Villa a draw in an incredible game. Shaun Maloney volleyed Villa ahead and Petr Cech’s gaffe gifted him a second but Zat Knight saw red and Andriy Shevchenko netted from the spot. Shevchenko spanked Chelsea level and Alex crashed in a third but Martin Laursen equalised before Ricardo Carvalho saw red for a nasty lunge. Michael Ballack’s free-kick seemed to have won it but Barry made it 4-4 when Ashley Cole was sent off for handball.

Manchester United swept aside Sunderland with ease to end the day top of the Premier League after Arsenal’s evening draw at Portsmouth. An inspired Wayne Rooney opened the scoring on 20 minutes, coolly stroking the ball home from 18 yards. Rooney then set up United’s second, clipping in a cross for Louis Saha to volley sweetly into the bottom corner. Cristiano Ronaldo curled in a free-kick on 45 minutes and Saha rounded things off with an 86th-minute penalty.

Robbie Keane and Tom Huddlestone each scored a brace to help Spurs win and compound managerless Fulham’s Premier League struggles at White Hart Lane. Keane tapped in the first after Steed Malbranque’s volley had hit the post. Huddlestone’s excellent 20-yarder then made it 2-0, before Clint Dempsey bundled home against the run of play. A Keane tap-in and Huddlestone drive put Spurs back in control immediately, though, and after Moritz Volz had seen red, Jermain Defoe rounded off the win.

Steven Gerrard’s last-gasp goal spared Liverpool’s blushes at lowly Derby. Fernando Torres’ superb goal had given Liverpool an early lead as the Spaniard scored after beating two defenders. But Liverpool failed to take a number of chances and Jay McEveley sent an angled shot past Jose Reina to equalise midway through the second half. Gerrard then crashed the ball against the bar, but with time running out the Liverpool captain was on hand to score after Lewis Price saved from Torres.

Arsenal missed the chance to reclaim top spot after drawing with Portsmouth. In a game of few clear chances, Arsenal came closest to scoring in the first half through Tomas Rosicky but his dipping shot was saved by David James. Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia had a quieter time of it, though he got down quickly to save Niko Kranjcar’s shot. Benjani burst clear for Pompey but his touch to get past Almunia was too heavy, while William Gallas and Rosicky went desperately close for Arsenal.

A disappointing contest was settled by Taylor’s brilliant 25-yard effort after Alan Smith had fouled Michael Brown. After a shocking first half the game improved, with Titus Bramble heading a Mark Viduka shot off the line and Paul Scharner forcing Shay Given to save. Given saved another long-range Taylor strike soon after as Wigan pressed and they easily held on for three points.

Alex McLeish secured his first home win as Birmingham boss as the Blues saw off an ineffective Boro at St Andrews. They went ahead when Stewart Downing sliced Gary McSheffrey’s free-kick into his own net inside the six-yard box. On the stroke of half-time, Mikael Forssell made it two when he prodded in a corner from close range after Cameron Jerome had flicked on. Boro had plenty of the play but lacked composure and McSheffrey added an injury-time penalty after being fouled.
